| Dear LHAB,
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Scott Harmon, who died September 24 after a long illness. Scott was one of the Longhorn Band’s most dedicated and committed leaders and someone whose influence and impact cannot be overstated. He served LHAB for decades in virtually every capacity, leading us both on and off the field and committing countless hours to the organization he loved so much. He was immensely loved by his LHAB family, and he will be terribly missed.
Scott came to UT in 1968 and played piccolo under Vincent DiNino before serving as drum major, LHB President, and in many other leadership roles. He continued to stay involved with LHB and LHAB, serving in almost every position, including LHAB President in 1993-94. He led LHAB through many Band Day rehearsals with his drum major whistle and played with the Dallas area LHAB group at countless performances and events.
Scott also served multiple terms on the Board of Trustees of the Longhorn Alumni Band Charitable Fund, working to support LHB students through scholarships. He worked diligently with a small group of alumni to create the Longhorn Band Foundation, the genesis of LHAB’s efforts to expand financial support for LHB which sparked the Legacy Fund and Back the Band Campaign. His tireless efforts to create and grow permanent scholarship endowments for LHB students and to support LHB were highly influential, and his legacy will be one of exceptional leadership and giving.
The Harmon family plans to hold a celebration of life sometime in Austin in the spring, and we will share those details as soon as they are known to us. If you wish to honor Scott’s memory, please consider a scholarship gift in his honor to the Longhorn Alumni Band Charitable Fund or Parkinson Voice Project.
Please keep Scott’s family in your thoughts and prayers. |
